Data Science Africa (DSA) – Lexicon

  1. DSA Affiliated Centre: A research or academic institution formally connected to DSA to collaborate on data science and AI initiatives.
  2. DSA Community: The collective of individuals, institutions, and partners engaged with Data Science Africa’s activities and mission.
  3. DSA Event: The flagship annual convening of DSA, typically structured as a 3-day Summer School followed by a 2-day Workshop, bringing together students, researchers and practitioners to advance skills, share knowledge, and build collaborations in data science and AI.
  4. DSA Fellow: An individual selected to participate in DSA’s fellowship programs, contributing to research, training, and community building.
  5. DSA Local Chapter: A regional branch of DSA that organizes localized DSA Events and connects members within a specific area.
  6. DSA Summer School: An intensive, multi-day training program organized by DSA to build skills in data science, machine learning, and AI, with a strong emphasis on applied, locally relevant problems. It precedes the DSA Workshop as part of the annual DSA Event.
  7. DSA Workshop: A focused 2-day forum following the Summer School, bringing together participants to discuss technical advances, share research, and engage with stakeholders on applications of data science and AI in Africa.
  8. DSA Visiting Fellowship: A short-term fellowship allowing researchers or practitioners to collaborate with DSA-affiliated institutions or projects.
  9. Funding Call: An open invitation for researchers to apply for financial support for projects aligned with DSA’s objectives.
  10. Hackathon: A time-bound collaborative event where participants work intensively on solving data science or AI challenges.
  11. Host Institution: An academic or research institution or organization that provides academic and/or administrative support to DSA fellows, programs, or activities.
  12. Research Grant: Financial support or funding opportunity made available for research projects in data science and AI.
  13. Research Award: The research grant once it has been awarded to successful applicants, recognizing their proposed project for funding.
  14. Strategic Partners: Academic or research institutions or organizations that collaborate with DSA at a high level to advance shared goals in data science capacity building.
  15. Sub-Grant: A portion of funding from a larger grant, distributed by DSA as the primary grantee to support specific research projects.
  16. Sub-Grantee: Researchers receiving funding from DSA through a larger grant awarded to DSA as the primary grantee.
